About the data
The journals: JF = Journal of Finance, JFE = Journal of Financial Economics, RFS = Review of Financial Studies, JFQA = Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, RoF = Review of Finance. These are widely regarded as the top journals in finance; Financial Management is not included.
Counts for JF, JFE, RFS, and JFQA (1990–2025) come from the ASU / W.P. Carey Finance Rankings, which hand-curate author affiliations. Counts for the Review of Finance start in 2004, when the journal took its current name (its 1997–2003 run as the European Finance Review is excluded), and were compiled from the OpenAlex scholarly database: every article with a DOI is credited once to each author's university, using the affiliations recorded by OpenAlex.
Whole counting is used throughout: an article counts once per university regardless of how many of its coauthors are from that university, and only academic institutions are counted (central banks and other non-academic affiliations are excluded). OpenAlex affiliation data is missing for roughly 9% of Review of Finance articles, so its counts may slightly undercount; we manually reviewed every such article in July 2026 and found no missed Canadian credits.
The Review of Finance numbers are open to verification: the complete list of counted papers (school, year, title, authors, and a link to each article) is available as a PDF (download link works on the GitHub Pages version of this site). Corrections are welcome: email mperez@wlu.ca.
